The Commissioners approved the proposed budget 3-2, with County Judge Bill Freeman and Precinct 2 Commissioner Steve Key in opposition.
“I don’t think it’s right to pay 3 percent when we can afford to pay more,” Freeman said.

How can anyone be so reckless with our money or so naive about what I can afford? I can not afford it, I guess these are the creators of the Cooke County Liars Club! If the judge can afford more, maybe he is overpaid! At very least Freeman is saying "All Cooke County employees are paid enough to almost double their property tax bill." Texas it is not just a Cooke County problem, property tax in Texas is made home improvement something we watch on TV because we are afraid of the County Tax Assessor! I for one would like to have solar power for my house, but buy the time I get done with the increase to Cooke County property tax, I will have paid over ten times the cost! I want to be green as much as the next guy! Green purchases such as solar cells should be tax free, not Texas property tax prohibitive. We need to take control of our taxes away from these idiots and get rid of all property tax in Texas! Wouldn't it be nice to have a house you really own. Most Texans will pay more in Property taxes over 15 years than they did for the house because the "value goes up". Listen you taxing Texans, the value only goes up "IF WE SELL" the house. Value is what a willing buyer WILL (as in the price I actually paid) pay a willing seller! What is about this value concept do the Cooke County Tax Nazis not understand? Cooke County will take my $100,000.00 house if I do not pay the $3,000 a year for property tax. What part of theft, fraud, and extortion do you not get? To take a house No one has lost their house or business for not paying sales tax. Sales tax should be basically the only tax we have in Texas. Property tax is wrong for so many reasons! Property Taxes Are Wrong Because You can Never 'Pay it Off'

On so many levels Property Taxes are Wrong, Wrong, Wrong.

Income tax is wrong too, but at least you had to have an income to pay it.

Property tax is wrong because to enforce it, you give counties the 'right' to inspect homes and businesses, this is a gross invasion of our privacy! All tax collectors share information with each other and often causes tax people to 'miss the boat' and you and I pay for it.

Property tax is a lifetime debt that you can never get out of. Oh sure the mortgage only last 30 years.

Property tax is wrong because after you retire, many people can not afford tax increases every year and have to move into a small apartment or something.

Sales tax is the ONLY fare tax in America. If you can't afford something you do not buy it!

Property tax is wrong because you are taxed even if you have no way to pay it!

Property tax is wrong because people who can afford to make major improvements such as solar power, can not afford to pay for it the rest of their life.

Property tax is wrong because it discourages new businesses.

Property tax is wrong because it makes property ownership difficult or impossible.

Property tax is wrong because 'tax assessors' always over inflate the value of your home or business. Cooke county is no exception, if you guys think it's worth so much, let me sell it to you!

Property tax is wrong because there is NEVER an ability to pay component. All property tax payers are rich in the eyes of the assessor!

What if your house is paid for. Think again! We are all in life time debt to the property tax folks.

Property tax is wrong because you WILL lose your home or business even if you didn't make any money!

Property tax is wrong because, the 'tax assessors' are changing the value of your property all the time and you could pay more in property tax than you did for the property! At least if you made it a sales tax on the property it would be paid for when the house is.

Property tax is wrong because it is never paid for!!! How can we Americans assume that just because they have property, that entitles Cities, Counties, and States to debt that can NEVER be paid off!

Property tax is wrong in so many ways!

I know what you are thinking, Jim we have to pay for the schools. True enough but if you need the increase the sales tax if you must but at least I am not taking on a life-time debt that can never be paid for, and once the sale is done, so is the tax.

Property tax is wrong because, the value of houses go up and people move all the time because they can no longer afford the property tax.

Here again what other states do is up to them, but we need to move Texas property tax to Sales tax! It would be nice to get off of all taxes, but if you must have tax money at least do it by sales tax, so I can 'pay it off'.

No one in Texas has lost there home for not paying their sales tax!

Comon' Texas let's be the first State to abolish property taxes! We could increase sales tax to pay for it. At least Sales Tax is 'paid off' after the sale.

Let's make Texas the one place you really can own your house and business! The short of this is we'll probably have to increase sales tax to offset the initial loss. The long side is more people will want to come to Texas, more sales tax money, on, and on. It will be good for the Texas economy too. It sounds almost too good to be true, but imagine, you have your house paid for, it truly is your house. You can not be 'property valued' out of your house or business NEVER.

If you promise to lower property taxes, even if you are successful, it is short lived, but if you make property tax illegal, they will not be back in a couple of years.

Here is a list of folks who are losing everything for the lack of money to pay Property tax! Examples of things that should not happen in Texas!

Of all the ways we Americans are taxed, the property tax is the absolute most regressive tax we have. It is the WORST way to tax ourselves.

We need to make property tax illegal in Texas. The government NEVER gets the wrongs of property tax. Here in Gainesville, they say only 3% for business property tax, that is cheaper than your income tax. Right, even the I R S has never asked for more than I have made. Oh sure they come close. We are selling ShopInGainesville.com because we not pay the county 40k a year when that is way more that the web site was making. We are also selling worksoftware.biz for the same reason.

If we had no property tax in Texas, more business and homes would be built here. I guess one could look at property tax as a way to slow growth.

If we did have any property tax, everyone would head to Texas in a week.

You can never pay it off! Property Tax is Wrong!

Property tax is wrong because it makes it is a tax on business without regard to the profits a business makes.

Property tax is wrong because it makes liars out of EVER business owner in Cooke County, Texas. The tax here is so high it far exceeds the money we are making, 3 percent of every thing you own every year, this is 3 percent of everything you own, not 3 percent sales tax on on what you sold. Pretty much any one in Gainesville would be broke if they filed the property tax correctly, so heads up, we are all going to just continue to lie!

Cooke county has a special property tax for business. 3 percent off the value of each computer, desk, sheet of paper, pen, vehicle, furniture, and telephone, in addition to the property tax you already paid on the building. They tell me that home businesses are subject to the tax as well! There is no way to report this accurately and still make money! So I guess we in Cooke county are all going to be criminals by default! If you filed the forms correctly 3 percent of everything that is in any office to include home offices! This in addition to sales tax we already collected for Texas and Cooke County, and Gainesville! That is crazy! And this has to be paid every year! For us, this is a 50% county income tax in a state where income tax is illegal! How can you Cooke County, Texas folks be so anti-business?
